I can't see any flickering here, neither with Gtk+ nor with anything else.
I take that back. I've just found some places where there's *extreme* flickering involved when using xserver-xorg-backclear.patch, especially with minimizing/restoring some non-toolkit apps, Acrobat Reader, for example:
