    This is great going forward. My camera actually records in 4k HEVC and up until now has been abysmally slow at playback. It's good to hear this will be on mesa-git!

      Support for HEVC in VDPAU has been available for a while. This just adds support for VAAPI.

        Cool, thanks for clarifying. So no need to use vaapi unless you want to.

          It is your option, somewhere you may want vaapi somewhere vdpau decoding.

            Yeah. For example when vdpau doesn't work on its own and you have to use it through vaapi which again doesn't work on its own. (depending on your HW)

              Yeah i like to describe usecases as: if you use Adobe Flash then vdpau, but if you use HTML5 then vaapi Or for apps whatever suit your usecase best. Also vaapi sound like only way to go for Wayland, but both for now just sounds well and not used much like vdpau or X so... you know

                @agd5f

                Does VAAPI has the same bug like VDPAU to advertise HEVC von old chips like RS780?

                  Would like to see a vdpauinfo and vainfo output of those chips and see how good it works with kodi or mpv. Nice test files you find at

                    I just don't think choice is as good an option as people think it is. vaapi started out as part of Intel's "must stand alone" mentality. Its never been a good thing.
