Images on Home Page

Been toying around with some improvements to the Phoronix.com home page today to include images, etc....

Any feedback welcome in weighing whether to keep the changes. Thanks!

It looks quite distracting for me, but that could be just getting used to it. However, I miss some padding around the images and some of the images are larger then the text. It looks a bit messy this way, and I don't know if the images really add something.

an option to disable images would be good as it means i spend more time scrolling.

Yes, but, I think they ruin the look of the news page. The pictures are poorly selected. That's why they don't fit here.

One of the the things I like about Phoronix is that it is very simple and quick to load. It's why I use it as my homepage. It doesn't need to be glitzy or pander to phone/table users. Please keep it that way.
