      PHP is a fine scripting language for the desktop, there's just not many distributions shipping PHP-GTK since not many projects use it (I think the phoronix-test-suite is the most notable one to use it), but Mandriva for example ships it for the Phoronix Test Suite.

      Most people though just use the phoronix-test-suite from the command line interface or via the web from like Phoromatic.com.

          It seems that the latest version of php-gtk (which is 2 years old by now) isn't compatible with php 5.3. I did manage to compile it once with Fedora 8, but since then it always fails on every other distro I tried.

            Jup, that is what I have found out and wrote on my blog that is why you need to use php-gtk via svn. Check out my blog for details.
