Linus Torvalds developed Git after BitKeeper's parent company (BitMover) announced the end of providing the software free to the community and associated obstacles.

No, it's not what really happened. BitKeeper wasn't content with the fact that BK's protocol was reverse engineered by Linux developers so a row ensued which resulted in Linus deciding not to depend on a proprietary software solution.

Both narratives happens to be true. Andrew Tridge (Samba developer) who worked for OSDL (predecessor of Linux Foundation) did some some reverse engineering work on BitKeeper protocol. Larry from BitKeeper stopped licensing to OSDL in response (and subsequently ended the gratis version altogether after a conversation with Linus). Linus also was working for OSDL at that time and therefore no longer had access to BitKeeper. He decided to developed Git.

If Bitkeeper requires bitkeeper inorder to get bitkeeper, it isn't going fare well. Also GitHub is a very popular collob dev platform. Using it is pretty logical.

I would be quite interested in seeing a comparison between Git and BK, both feature-wise and performance-wise.

Yes, but a source-control system that isn't self-hosted kind of sends the wrong message. I remember when Git support on Eclipse was new, they had an exemption to host their plugins outside the Eclipse version control (CVS or SVN or whatever it was at the time), because it wasn't really appropriate to bar them from using their own plugin to develop that plugin.
