  • HDMI Ethernet

HDMI 1.4 includes 'ethernet over HDMI' and I've seen HDMI ports on some switches at work but I've not been able to find much info on this such as how well its supported under Linux or how I might take advantage of the 10Gps data transfer rate HDMI 1.4 offers.

I think it'd be very cool if you could simply connect two HDMI 1.4 compliant machines (with fast SSDs) together with a HDMI cable to do some lightning fast file transfers. Would that be possible or would a switch/router with HDMI ports be required?

Anyone here ever tried HDMI ethernet?

It was something they put in the spec but never ever used in any devices. I don't know if it just turned out to be a bad idea or too costly to implement but there it is. I think a big problem with that - on paper anyway - is that you have to have a centralized device - most likely a receiver - acting as a router/switch/hub and that's not easy to implement into a device. In fact, it's something they have just started to put into A/V receivers with regular Ethernet.
