  • Factors contributing to performance difference between Fedora 33 and Ubuntu 20.10

    Hello,

Despite using the identical kernel version (5.11-rc3), kernel configuration, gcc version (10.02), and compiler flags on the same machine, Fedora 33 Workstation consistently completes code compilation tasks around 10% to 25% faster compared to Ubuntu 20.10.

    For instance:
Kernel Compilation: Fedora 33 WS takes 126 minutes, while Ubuntu 20.10 takes 143 minutes (user time).
CERN ROOT compilation: Fedora 33 WS takes 177 minutes, whereas Ubuntu 20.10 takes 224 minutes (user time).

Out of scientific curiosity, I wonder about the underlying factors contributing to such a significant difference in performance. The test machine in question is equipped with a Ryzen 2700x processor, 16GB of RAM, and an NVMe storage device.
