DisplayPort 1.2 did fix the bandwidth issue. This Dell monitor shows up as two monitors over a single cable when it could easily show up as one monitor over a single cable.

I read that this is because the controllers of the monitor can't handle it as a single one. Maybe a cost related choice but i have no idea TBH.

The problem is bandwidth. It's also why many 4K displays refresh at 30Hz instead of 60Hz.

Thank you for having a strong opinion, but no clue about the subject at hand.

Treating two separate displays as a single display must be solved in each display server separately.

Ideally, it would be solved in KMS so it'd just work everywhere, but it'd be non-trivial to configure there in case you wish to keep them separate. The kernel command line isn't really userfriendly.

With prices below 1K it will become an issue sooner or later. Or at least it will be one until they start making monitors that behave like a single one.

X.org should treat them as one display so that normal programs functions
as expected. For programs that would like to use them in a special way,
information should be provided in a non breaking way.
