Where I live (in EU). If you factor the cost of an official windows license from oem 88€ (at cheapest price, perpetual being more around 140€) to pro version non oem at 360€. You have a margin of 88€ to 360€ headroom for your hardware (if you install it yourself, shop charges the windows install). Being the ram/motherboard, better cpu or gpu. You can get from 10% to 40% perf uplift depending on the license you choose. So worth considering. For the same price you will get a better pc on linux than using windows. And it will be better on everything else than gaming as well.

The benchmark is already showing it faster or on par with Windows for things that have native Linux ports. The Windows games running over Proton will be slower whether you use Ubuntu or any other distro, they are games that have never been optimized for Linux. Also, Ubuntu is NOT slower than Windows, where did you get that info from? Finally, regardless of your opinion about Ubuntu, it remains the most widely used distro so Michael's choice makes sense.Originally posted by tildearrow View PostComment

So even if Ubuntu is already showing to be equal or better than Windows, using a distro more optimized for gaming would be a nice way of comparing "the gaming OS" to the best of what Linux has to offer.
On another note, 3D production performance for my 3060 is this: (Blender classroom scene, GPU)
- Windows: 30.5 - 31.5 seconds
- Ubuntu: 30.5 - 31.5 seconds
- LMDE/Fedora: 28.2 seconds
It may not look like much, but 11-12% faster renders make a noteworthy difference in render times when you have hundreds or thousands of frames to render.
NOTE: The Ubuntu benchmarks were done in the default DE, but also on Kubuntu and UbuntuMATE (all 22.04 versions);
NOTE: The LMDE5 benchmark was done in Cinnamon with the very old 470 NVIDIA driver;
NOTE: The Fedora benchmark was done with Fedora 37 with the 530.41.03 driver.Comment
