    Intel is slowly running out of models in family 6 (models are 8 bits, so 256 models total, even if some of them never shipped or are otherwise reserved). A new family is needed.

          Itanium is family 7 and pentium 4 is family 15, so I dont know what special support linux needs to support different families than 6

              T'il the other Manufacturers are covered by patches. If they will to! Or some at kernel will inherit the heavy job.
