    I think Intel is not-so-subtly telling us that they're tired, and it's time to break out the brown stuff to mourn the death of moore's law, and the end of the good times for speculative OoO.

          I had to make a little cheat sheet yesterday to stop myself from getting confused with all these damn Intel CPUs. I'm still getting a Zen 2 but the confusion was bothering me. (I don't care enough to know where Amber Lake falls).

          Broadwell (14nm shrink of Haswell)

          Kaby Lake (14nm+)
          Coffee Lake (14nm++)
          Whiskey Lake (14nm+++)

                I agree, confusing as hell. I skimmed the article and when I looked at the Amber lake part and saw i7 in conjunction with a TDP of 5 watts and was like "No way." Then I read more thoroughly and realized the i7 part isn't even quadcore. Man, at 5W TDP, how often must that clock bump it's head on the ceiling?

                As far as I remember, weren't the performance classes as follows?:
                Celeron: up to 2 core, no L3.
                Pentium: up to 4 core, no L3.
                i3: up to 2 core w/ HT, small L3.
                I5: up to 4 core w/o HT, medium to large L3.
                i7: up to 4 core w/ HT, large L3, High frequency.
                I9: "Let's just see how deep this rabbit hole goes..."

                  There is a reason Charlie calls it "i-somethingmeaningless". There is almost no correlation.

                  Another correction, 2/4 core Coffee Lake is just a rebranded Kaby lake. And so is Whiskey and Amber. no 14+++ exists.
                  The new Whiskey/Amber processors just have an updated chipset, and updated, but unreachable "1C Turbo speeds"
