Have you used a VIA motherboard?

They had a reputation for being buggy even when they were very common for AMD systems. I am merely reporting my experience with that machine. I was surprised that I was able to get that one version of Ubuntu working (Xubuntu I believe). Perhaps having just 768 MB of RAM, some of it used by system graphics, also played a role. I didn't have the same difficulty with the Athlon 64 system.
