    I'd love to see a new Thunderbolt standard and new controllers making use of PCIe 4.0 or even 5.0. PCIe x4 could provide two 80Gbps ports or four respectively.

      Yeah, good luck shoving PCIe 4.0 class signals into a cable.

        intelfx Displayport 2.0 is specced at 20Gbps times four lanes, so in principle it is possible. There are also industrial cables that take raw PCIe 4.0 and carry it externally - these utilize a different signal modulation than a hypothetical Thunderbolt 5 however…

        Anyhow, I'd be willing to buy an expensive shielded or fiberoptic cable any time of the day if it meant getting this much external general purpose IO bandwidth.
