    mythms: Thanks for all that.

Any reason for not starting X with startx -- -logverbose 6 to create your Xorg.0.log? Note the 6. You can also use any number greater than 6. It appears that you have used 5. Although,....

I guess it is possible that some X-saboteurs (similar folk to the well known kernel saboteurs) may have rewritten the X-server recently to report far less information (than the version I am using) and in an obscured (ie hex) format. This would be expected (at some point).

mythms, I need the results of startx -- -logverbose 6 to determine if the modelines are set correctly.

The option -logverbose 6 means that the X-server tries to validate each mode (both custom and standard modes) in turn.

If a mode is not valid, it reports the reason why it is not valid.

What a time to go on vacation.

Anyone else got a Vizio VW26L HDTV. Maybe we can work things out for mythms.

try 1360x768, because native res is 1366 wide of course you get a small black boarder left+right. 1368 is too big.
The 1366x768@60 seems weird since 1366 is not divisible by eight and will be rejected by the X-server.

Is that why you suggest 1368 (which is too big) and 1360?

You have to use 1360 in those cases. The native res is however 1366, so you have to live with some small borders.

It seems that mythms has deliberately avoided coughing up the results of startx -- -logverbose 6

Why do you think this is?

Anyone wish to speculate on this?

Looks like mythms also lied about the setup.

Not only will 1368x768 be too large a resolution, but the Vizio-VW26L manual states this:

              Computer: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1366x768 thru VGA/RGB or 640x480 thru HDMI

That is, when using the TV as a computer monitor, you only get 640x480 resolution thru HDMI (not the 1368x768 or 1366x768, claimed by mythms).

So,... why all the apparent deception? What exactly is going on here?

Anyone willing to hazard a guess at the motives here?

How about the idea of folk posting their EDID mode-lines in a separate thread?
