We next looked at the ray-tracing performance across the five operating systems by first running POV-Ray. Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 12 did the best and were tied while OpenSolaris and FreeBSD 7.2/8.0 all performed roughly the same, which was significantly behind Linux.

While Linux was superior with POV-Ray, when it came to the multi-threaded C-Ray, FreeBSD did the best. FreeBSD 7.2 was slightly faster than FreeBSD 8.0, but both were faster than Ubuntu/Fedora and OpenSolaris. OpenSolaris came in third while Fedora and Ubuntu took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Running the dcraw test profile was another instance where the two Linux operating systems performed about the same but OpenSolaris and FreeBSD performed together and that was behind Linux.
