Moving away from the encoding tests, our next area of interest was with file compression. The 7-Zip compression benchmark had performed the best with OpenSolaris 2010.02 followed by FreeBSD 8.0. FreeBSD 7.2 came in slightly behind FreeBSD 8.0 while Ubuntu 9.10 came in fourth and Fedora 12 took a distant fifth place finish.

OpenSolaris 2010.02 maintained its first place lead when it came to compressing a 2GB file using Gzip, but Fedora 12 pulled in right behind the Sun OS followed by Ubuntu 9.10. There was a noticeable difference between these operating systems using ZFS and EXT4 compared to the UFS-based FreeBSD. FreeBSD 8.0 had actually regressed in this test compared to the 7.2 release.

Our third compression test looked at the LZMA performance where Ubuntu 9.10 was in first followed by Fedora and OpenSolaris being close behind. About ten seconds separated the two FreeBSD releases from Fedora/OpenSolaris.
