I plan to reinstall the machine once I have some time.
I'll initially use the Nouveau driver and report bugs to Fedora.
Hopefully they'll find the switch needed to get the laptop to suspend reliably.

I do wonder, do you still experience the random power off problem?

    Hi,

I did not have any random power off problems before, and I do not have any now. I always used the proprietary driver, and I also always had the Intel5100 wifi card installed.

The power off happened only when I tried to suspend/hibernate more than once between shutdowns. The only problem that I am experiencing now is the bios reset. This happens if I reboot the machine after running it on battery without a shutdown. So, e.g. if I run the machine on AC power and I reboot, then no problem. If I run it on battery power and I reboot it resets the bios. If I run it on AC power but I unplug it and then plug it back in and I restart, it resets the bios. If I simply say continue after the bios is reset, my system only sees 768MB of memory. I have to go to the bios and do "exit and save" to get all my memory back. However, since I hardly ever restart the computer I can live with this issue. Other than this everything works fine, including multiple suspends/hibernates, screen brightness, sound, microphone, camera etc.

      How did you install OpenSUS.
I tried using the LiveUSB image [1], and I can see that the BIOS is scanning the USB drive, but it always end up booting from the HD.

EDIT: Strike that. I failed to notice that a bios reset killed my previous settings. Reconfigured the BIOS and now the LiveUSB is working.

I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2... and I'm getting the same results. (with or w/o the binary driver).
In all cases, the netbook will suspend once, and fail miserably the second time.

... This means that the problem is not that distribution versions/configuration (Fedora/Ubunutu vs. OpenSUSE), but actually the active configuration.

... Which means that if we pin-point the missing switch, you could switch back to Ubuntu (If you like) and I can stay with Fedora.

I'll contact the Fedora devs and ask them how to debug this issue.

Sorry, I completely missed your post. It's very interesting. My install is just simply perfect. What did you install exactly? I have opensuse 64bit running with the nvidia driver. A completely untouched install (except the nvidia driver) just works for me. Also, I am using Gnome. What do you think could be the difference?

            Thanks,
            Gabor

Just did a install of 11.2 on one of these as well (KDE4 though) and it's working fine as well.

11.1, KDE, with or w/o nVidia drivers.
Second suspend goes to hell. Weird!

Are you two using the same kernel?

                  Hi,

I just reinstalled the machine. This time I used OpenSuse Gnome again but the 32 bit version and of course the proprietary Nvidia driver. Everything works fine.

We are using opensuse 11.2. I used the 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop kernel.
