It would be interesting to see if there is any measurable difference between the karmic snapshot and the 7.6 in x-updates. There is still a fair amount of activity on the 7.6 branch, I guess 7.6.2 will be out soon.

I may still be able to add that in today.

The good news is that these decisions have been reviewed and there will now be mesa 7.6 (based on the recent Debian mesa 7.6) in Karmic! But with a pull-back plan, if serious regressions are discovered. This is where your testing comes in useful, make sure any regressions are fixed upstream so there will be none in Karmic

Thank you for that. Tested with yesterday's daily build and found no regressions at all. In fact it solved some gfx glitches I had with 9.10 beta on Intel laptop.
Can't test with ATI since I only have a R620.

          Ubuntu 9.10 is looking nice!

          Thanks Tormod

Can you please tell which glitches? Are they reported somewhere? Since the new 7.6 is "on trial" it is useful to have documented what it fixes.

Bad news. I recently updated my 2 PCs running Karmic. Both machines use the same video card radeon X1900. Both machines started crashing X back to the login screen. On one machine I can no longer log in. On the other machine, I was able to stabilize the machine by disabling desktop effects. this did n't seem to help the other.

How can I back out the Mesa 7.6 changes?

This is maybe https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446578 ? Are you using Kubuntu? Can you please try the packages from Bryce's beige PPA, as suggested in the bug report?

To revert to old packages, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/Mesa7.6

Yes that looks exactly like what I see. (and yes I'm running kubuntu) I'll try some of the suggestions.

I reported a bug on launchpad which should probably be marked as duplicate of the one you site.

Binary package hint: xorg I recently updated my 2 PCs running Karmic. Both machines use the same video card radeon X1900. Both machines started crashing X back to the login screen. On one machine I can no longer log in. I was able to stabilize the second machine by disabling desktop effects. This did n't seem to help the first machine. How can I back out the Mesa 7.6 changes to know whether that change is the source of the regression? ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 CurrentDmesg: [ ...

Yes, I'm running Kubuntu and Yes, the bug you site sounds exactly like what I see. I will try the suggested packages.

also I filed my own bug on launchpad which should probably be marked as a duplicate of the one you site.

sorry for the duplicate posts. I didn't realize that I have to wait for my post to be approved by a moderator which is odd since my posts showed up immediately last night.
