Sigh, I gues it's kinda makes no sense to point out you guys are seriously off-topic. Anyways, you can have your Icons on the desktop using plasma, you can have your panel/task manager on the top/bottom/left/right edge of the screeen. Even right in the midle (task manager) or none at all. Hey it's KDE, yu can have your desktop anyway you want.
Aabout Plasma2 desktop (aka KDE 5 for stubborn oldtimers) it's still missing few bits, mostly KCMs and such. KScreen is there (at least in dvratils plasma copr repo), bluedevil works, tho it has to be started manually. For the little time I spent with it Plasma seems to be quite stable, tho it could be improved for sure (afterall it's not been in such heavy use as KDE4), it's just a matter of time when all major kinks are found/ironed out.
More themes would be welcome, KDE4 ones kinda work, but would need some adjustment.
