Phoronix: Canonical Shifts Its Fiscal Year Ahead Of Likely IPO

You have likely heard by now about Ubuntu maker Canonical planning to do an initial public offering (IPO) at some point in the not too distant future to become a publicly-traded company. The latest sign of that is Canonical has now shifted its corporate calendar...

Having more billion dollar Linux companies is a really good thing - let's hope they make it that far

We're starting to see 3 ubiquitous pillars of Linux and open source... RedHat, Suse, Canonical!

As boxie said, more large enterprise linux/open source companies is good for the open source industry regardless of the politics between them and slanging matches; it is a good trend and growth which opens up the world of IT to open-source to the detriment of the closed-source mobs of rotten-Apples and Micro$oft.

Yes, Linux is very successful in severs where Red Hat is mostly focused and now Canonical as well. Unfortunately GNU/Linux desktop is stuck at < 2% and Canonical has decided to reduce their investment here. However Google seems to be doing well with Chromebooks and of course Android.

Unfortunately the Desktop is a hard nut to crack. Just need to keep on at it and slowly chip away at the market.

Some goes for mobile, where Microsoft has been destroyed. Monopolies are hard to crack!

current billion dollar linux company is measured in revenue
ipo will not help canonical to get billion dollar revenue. at least not in the near term

I doubt any company or companies that invest in Canonical will make any big investments in the desktop because Linux desktop is not seen as profitable, investing in Linux desktop is high risk and return of investment is unlikely, it would have be someone with a lot of money to "waste". They will invest in things that bring money and where Ubuntu is strong like servers, cloud and IoT. It will be interesting to see which companies will invest in Canonical. Maybe Microsoft buys them and invests in Microsoft Ubuntu Linux Their Azure Sphere OS is based on Linux, but I doubt they have plans on creating a full desktop distribution. On a side note Shuttleworth's wealth increased by 340 million pounds, the self appointed benevolent dictator for life is doing good. Cant wait to see which companies will invest money in Canonical, regardless of the companies that invest I am sure that Linux community will have something to say about that in the usual calm, logic based and reasonable manner.
