The problem Linux has though is still the lack of tools. 3D Studio Max still has massive market share, there needs to be a Linux equivalent (UI wise, Blender can't cut it). Where's the Linux ZBrush? Still tons of tools missing from the platform. One of the biggest gaming problems is still the lack of modding tools. E.g Freespace 2 got ported 10 years ago, but FRED2 is still Windows only. No mission editor, (wXFred2 is an attempt to rewrite it but is still years away from being useful). Look at all the Total War games, tons of games got ported but no editing tools. Attila Assembly kit is Windows only. This is where the community needs to step in and start making tools. The platform of open sourcecode for everyone is still the platform where there's no editing tools for anyone outside of GCC/Programming editors.

Skip when it asks registration code and your e-mail and disable all tracking options and the ms update service. However, people with brains do not use it even if they get payed 100 usd.
If you do skip the registration, it will put you to the evaluation period which should terminate itself after 30 days.

Games on Windows is not at all unlike the history of the web on M$ IE. It took the better part of a decade and half to shift the web in the open direction, Mozilla played an instrumental part in that and none of it was easy/trivial.
M$ exerts a phenomenal influence over the market place, users in generally are probably not as smart as you think. If it is M$ will then it almost so-shall-it-be. I can't imagine Valve not knowing this as a functioning company that is able to pay the bills.
Everyone says Linux is a black hole bla bla, yet here we are the market say's otherwise. OS innovation doesn't have the instant-like adoption curves of the early 90's or like angry bird apps. People talk about "apps" now not "kernels", so tectonic plates shift in ways and speeds that are rather opaque without a deep understanding of the ecosystem in the context the tech market. Even M$ knows this, that's why Windows is getting given away for "free of charge".
Out of all of this this is a remarkably simple equation - The more game binaries on Linux the most chance of a market paradigm shift. So keep talking to the developers of games & remember Steve Ballmers wise words of advice to the Linux community, Developers Developers Developers.

Valve is playing a long game with Linux. I sincerely doubt they expected to make any money out of Steam Machines: the most basic market analysis would have shown them that. Instead, they are putting the stew on a slow simmer, getting developers on-board with better tools, with SteamOS as a reference platform, game engine support, and a show of commitment to keep the industry moving forward with Linux instead of leaving it behind. At some point (Windows 11?) Microsoft is going to turn Windows into a walled garden, and that will be the time when the Linux gates will be totally unleashed. Valve wants to make sure that they -- and Linux -- are ready for that moment.

Theres no sense in lighting the fireworks yet, Linux just got Vulkan and has more ground to tread before its ready to dethrone Windows as gaming bastion.
Gamers will jump on the 100$ licensing benefit when SteamOS and Windows are more 1:1ish which may be in a year or two.
Valve isnt stupid, theyre going to persue the most financially beneficial course & the course that extinguushes their competitors & converts console gamers to Steam gamers.
