OpenSolaris vs. Linux Kernel Benchmarks

The ZFS-based Nexenta produced the best results when upping the Threaded I/O Tester thread count to 32 threads. The slowest was Ubuntu i386 with the Linux 2.6.30 kernel. When it came to 64-bit Ubuntu, the Linux 2.6.24 kernel was faster than in the Linux 2.6.30 series.

Nexenta no longer had the advantage when switching from 64MB writes to 64MB reads. The latency with the Threaded I/O Tester was much higher using the OpenSolaris kernel than Linux. With both the i386 and x86_64 kernels, the newer Linux 2.6.30-rc4 kernel was faster than Linux 2.6.24. Nexenta CP2 RC2 was five and a half times slower than Ubuntu 32-bit with the Linux 2.6.30-rc4 kernel.

When performing thousands of database insertions with SQLite, Ubuntu was significantly faster than the OpenSolaris kernel with GNU user-land by many times.
