Switching over to FFmpeg to incorporate some video encoding too, Ubuntu 64-bit was the fastest but by a smaller margin.

When it came to encrypting a 2GB file using GnuPG, Nexenta CP2 RC2 was the fastest but it was less than a half second faster than Ubuntu 32-bit with the Linux 2.6.30-rc4 kernel. Ubuntu 64-bit with the newest Linux kernel was the slowest by nearly 30% over Nexenta.

The 64-bit version of Ubuntu 8.04 with the Linux 2.6.30 may have been the slowest at encrypting a file with GnuPG, but with the Threaded I/O Tester when using 64MB writes with four threads, this Ubuntu configuration had the least latency. Coming in second was Nexenta CP2 RC2 while Ubuntu 64-bit with the Linux 2.6.24 kernel and both Ubuntu 32-bit configurations were far slower.
