In some of the computational tests, there's performance improvements to find in more recent versions of Linux Mint due to the updated compiler stack, etc. However, overall the Linux Mint 17 performance doesn't tend to be hugely different from Linux Mint 16 since these two latest versions are using the GCC 4.8 compiler. GCC 4.9 didn't make it out in time to hit the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS repository as the default compiler.
