The Core i7 870 with its higher clock frequency pulled ahead of the Core i7 920 with the TSCP chess engine performance followed by the Phenom II X3 710.

Next up we looked at the computational biology performance by examining the performance of timed MAFFT alignment for multiple sequences. With this test profile, the Core i7 920 came out on top followed by the Core i7 870 and then the Phenom II X3 710 was a few seconds behind.

A new test profile in the Phoronix Test Suite 2.2 branch is NASA's NAS Parallel Benchmark, which contains many individual test sub-sets and classes written in Fortran. The Phoronix Test Suite is using the OpenMP version of the NAS Parallel Benchmark for proper multi-core support. With our first test, EP.B, the best performance was found on the Core i7 870 followed immediately behind the Core i7 920. Well behind these two processors with eight logical cores was the Core i5 750 and then the Phenom II X3 710.
