Easiest workarounds are a few settings changes for installing/booting...
Force it to use vesa drivers. Some options here:
The 2nd link deals with an ATI card but the premise is the same.
You can install the Nvidia driver afterwards. Is it a new card? Strange it's not utilizing the Nouveau driver but oh well... try those links and see if they help. You should be able to boot in 'safe graphics' mode. After installing, choose the safe graphics mode or enter that line in the boot line.
The 'sane' message is just referring to a scanner you have connected.
Maybe another poster will have an 'exact' process or settings edit to try but I think those links should be good until then.

So I removed the card.. did the install.. rebooted... installed nvidia-current from xswat PPA .. shut down, installed the card, moved the connected to my monitor to the card, rebooted, and all seems good. Just an unexpected pothole in the install process. In retrospect, I should have tried this earlier.
Going back and trying Ubuntu 11.10 on USB ... hit TAB and added --xforcevesa to the boot options and it booted to a command prompt when I wanted to "try ubuntu"... rebooted and this time chose to install and (with xforcevesa) and got to that GUI just fine. Altho after the 1st reboot, the screen off the nvidia ports was black and I got nothing via the IGP ports.. so I still had to remove the card... sigh. (I'm sure there is a trick there I just don't know)... this time it got stuck after "Checking battery state...." for the GUI boot.. I could ALT-Fn to command line logins... so I added the x-swat PPA that way and installed nvidia-current, shutdown, reinstalled the card, and rebooted, all seems good.
thanks for the tips!
