Video: The State of KDE Frameworks 5, Plasma 2
For those curious about the state of KDE Frameworks 5 and the Plasma 2 desktop interface, KDE developer Sebastian Kügler has posted a video of the current state of this new KDE code that's expected to stabilize in 2014.
Sebastian Kügler posted the video today to show off the state of KDE Frameworks 5 and Plasma 2. The video shows the Plasma 2 shell with the panel and task manager, a demo applet performing some OpenGL drawing, and is all running with the KWin window manager / compositor with Qt5.
While KDE Frameworks 5 and Plasma 2 are still early in development, Kügler noted on his blog, "We are just about to enter a state where the desktop becomes dogfoodable, so we can use it ourselves regularly and find and iron out all kinds of bugs. The good news is of course that this is the perfect time to get involved. While we’re not looking quite at the blank canvas that Plasma was when it came to be, right now we really are shaping the future of Plasma, you can take part in it and make it happen."
Under the new KDE release plan, KDE Frameworks 5 should be in a preview state by December and do its first actual release in the first half of 2014 and KDE Workspaces 2 will go into a preview state in the first quarter of next year and do a release one quarter later. It should be an exciting H1'2014 for KDE users.
