With the release of KDE Frameworks 5 expected in 2014 and other fundamental changes happening within the KDE development community, the release schedule/process is changing quite a lot.

Howard Chan wrote a dot.kde.org posting today about the evolving release structure of KDE. "With the upcoming Frameworks 5, the KDE Release Team will decouple the release cycles of Workspaces, Applications and Platform. While Applications will have more releases in the 4.x series, the Plasma Workspaces team has decided to focus on Workspaces 2. The recently released 4.11 version of Plasma Workspaces will have Long Term Support. Meanwhile, work on Frameworks 5 is progressing, making KDE technologies ready for the future."

With the more modular nature of KDE Frameworks 5 and the decoupling of the release schedule, KDE Frameworks 5 will be up to a preview status in December and in release mode in H1'2014. KDE Workspaces 2 will go into a preview mode in Q1'2014 and release mode in Q2'2014. Meanwhile for KDE 4, KDE Applications 4.12 will be released in mid-December and KDE Applications 4.13 will come in Q2/Q3 of next year.
