When looking at the other compute benchmarks with their stock Ubuntu configurations, there is not any huge change in performance. Both Ubuntu 11.10 and Ubuntu 12.04 are using the GCC 4.6 series compiler by default. There are some performance improvements in GCC 4.7 that target Sandy Bridge and other ongoing work to better AVX, etc. These are mostly exposed if switching to using custom CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS for 'corei7-avx' on Sandy Bridge.
