Civilization VI On Linux With RadeonSI Should Be Fine With Newer Mesa
When Aspyr Media announced yesterday that Civilization VI is shipping for Linux this week it was confirmed that only NVIDIA graphics are supported by this latest AAA Linux game release. But they later clarified that AMD "works", but with issues. But it doesn't sound too bad.
Aspyr had commented that AMD (presumably referring to the RadeonSI driver, not AMDGPU-PRO) "works" but they hadn't elaborated on the "issues." Of course, the lack of official AMD Linux support for this popular game has a lot of concerned Linux gamers and people expressing frustration with Aspyr Media.
The good news is that Valve's (Linux-focused) Pierre-Loup Griffais has tweeted, "Civilization VI appears to work fine on recent RadeonSI, for what it's worth."
By recent RadeonSI, likely Mesa 17.0~17.1-devel, at least there if you are running Git chances are you'll have the best performance possible with this current open-source driver stack. Assuming Civilization VI on Linux has suitable benchmark support, I'll deliver a number of NVIDIA/AMD Civ VI Linux graphics driver tests on Thursday.
