Leadwerks and Canonical are making the Linux-native Leadwerks Game Engine available through the Ubuntu Software Center.

Leadwerks was ported to Linux last year as part of a crowdfunding campaign and has been progressing quite well. Leadwerks is targeting Ubuntu both for carrying out rapid game development and as being their primary supported platform for gamers too.

In an email to Phoronix, a Leadwerks representative called this announcement big, because, "Linux users are no longer reliant on games ported from Windows; they can now make and play their own games, without ever leaving Linux." Additionally, "We are opening the door for more games to come to Linux, like 'Rogue System' and the other titles featured on our site." There's long been games developed on Linux and at the end of the year we'll see how many promising Leadwerks Linux titles are in development.

Those wanting to find out more about Canonical and Leadwerks' relationship can read the press release with the embargo expiring this morning.
