Samsung Electronics announced today, one week prior to the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, that all of their Smart TVs this year will be powered by the Linux-based Tizen operating system.

All Samsung Smart TVs being introduced this year are being powered by their new platform built on Tizen. Samsung's new Smart TV platform will also support Samsung Sports Live, PlayStation Now, and various other new content partnerships.

We've been waiting for Samsung to ship more Tizen devices and it looks like 2015 will finally be the year! In 2015 is when they finally launched their first Tizen smartphone and for fostering these efforts they've been hiring more Linux / open-source engineers.

Other Tizen devices include the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatches and Samsung NX1 photo camera. We've been known about Samsung's Tizen TV plans since they showed off prototypes last year at the Tizen Developer Conference. Tizen 2.3 is the latest official release of the Linux-based platform while Tizen 3.0 is under active development.

The announcement of Tizen coming to all Samsung Smart TVs this year was made via the Samsung blog.
