Fedora 21 Gets Proposals For Many More Features

It's certainly looking like Fedora 21 will premiere with a massive amount of features, perhaps the most ever. Fedora 21 already has a ton of features but another large batch of proposals have been submitted for this next major Linux distribution release due out at the end of 2014.

On top of the many features already approved by the Fedora Engineering and Steering Committee, including last week's F21 features, there's another big batch of feature proposals that were submitted in the past few days:

- Periodic Update to Images. The main focus here is being able to re-release official images of Fedora Linux on a monthly basis or when needed, in case of severe security updates. The main focus here is on issuing periodic image updates to Fedora Cloud images.

- The "Adopt-Your-Cattle" is about being able to convert a Fedora Cloud image deployment into a Fedora Server.

- Anaconda Support for Server Roles. The goal is for the Fedora installer to support the deployment of Fedora Server Roles from a Kickstart file.

- Packaging Apache Accumulo as a scalable sorted, distributed, key/value store.

- Getting Apache Ambari into Fedora as a cluster management framework and UI for Apache Hadoop.

- Supporting Apache Pig as a data analysis tool built on top of Apache Hadoop.

- Packaging up BerkeleyDB 6.

- Spinning a Big Data Cloud Image of Fedora 21 that would be tailred to various "Big Data" tasks within cloud computing environments.

- Docker Container Images for Fedora.

- Updating to TCL/TK 8.6.

- Packaging the Jenkins continuous integration tool.

- Ship the Fedora Server with the Cockpit Management Console.

- By default disable root access via any console device.

- Support for SCL as enabling Software Collections support in Fedora atop RPM.

- Make 4.0 for Fedora 21.

- Create Fedora Cloud images using Anaconda in Koji rather than the appliance-creator.

We should find out on Wednesday at the next FESCo meeting about which of these features (and potentially others) will be approved for Fedora 21, but chances are most of them will land for this next release that's tentatively due out in October.
