FreeBSD 9.2 Brings ZFS TRIM, ZFS LZ4, Updated DTrace

After being challenged by days and while FreeBSD 10.0 is up to Alpha 4, the FreeBSD Foundation and its developers released FreeBSD 9.2 today as stable.

While all of the major new features in the FreeBSD world are queued up for FreeBSD 10.0, FreeBSD 9.2 has its share of improvements:

- FreeBSD's ZFS file-system implementation now supports TRIM for solid-state drives (SSDs) and separately it also supports LZ4 transparent file-system compression.

- VirtIO drivers are now part of the i386 and AMD64 generic kernel configurations.

- DTrace hooks are on by default for the FreeBSD generic kernel. DTrace was also updated to version 1.9.0.

- Unmapped I/O support has been brought in from the latest FreeBSD head code.
