A Call For Deprecating The Linux Frame-Buffer FBDEV
A call was made during the Linux Plumbers Conference on Wednesday to deprecate the Linux kernel FBDEV support.
Laurent Pinchart made a call for deprecating FBDEV with DRM and V4L2 (Video 4 Linux 2) drivers being superior to FBDEV. In talking with him at the evening reception last night, Pinchart is evidently quite serious about seeing this Linux kernel frame-buffer abstraction layer be done away with entirely. However, in reality it's likely that the support won't be dropped from the Linux kernel anytime soon.
More details on Laurent's multimedia talk from LPC 2012 will be covered in another Phoronix article.
