While there's already been articles looking at the Nouveau NVIDIA driver and AMD Radeon driver on the forthcoming Linux 3.8 kernel, up today are some early computational benchmarks of this new kernel. From an Intel Core i7 "Ivy Bridge" system, some general-purpose Linux benchmarks were conducted from the Linux 3.5 kernel release through the latest Linux 3.8 Git development kernel.

With the Linux 3.8 kernel being in its very early stages still and there being over one month to go before the final Linux 3.8 kernel is officially released, this initial Intel Linux benchmarking on the new kernel is very brief and straight forward. When using the mainline Linux kernel builds of 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, and 3.8 Git (from 31 December 2012), a variety of Phoronix Test Suite benchmarks with OpenBenchmarking.org test profiles were run to look for any differences between the kernels impacting these user-space processes.

For those not up to speed on the changes/features to be offered by this next Linux kernel release, see The Feature Overview For The Linux 3.8 Kernel. More extensive Linux 3.8 benchmarks will be conducted as the final release is on approach.
