Among the highlights for this first day of the Ubuntu Online Summit for the Yakkety Yak includes:
- Figuring out finishing up the move to Python 3. Python 2 remains on the Ubuntu desktop ISO as of Ubuntu 16.04. As part of that, there's a goal of also moving Python 2 over to the Ubuntu Universe archive rather than the Main archive. However, it looks like at least the demotion of Python 2 to universe might not happen until Ubuntu 18.04 LTS due to OpenStack still having dependencies on the older version of Python. Bazaar, the Ubuntu Landscape client/server, Ubuntu SSO, Samba, and other programs are also still depending upon Python 2.
- More talk about convergent apps.
- Ubuntu Discourse is set to close unless Microsoft intervenes.
- Handling legacy apps with Mir / Snappy.
- With regards to Ubuntu Touch porting, they may skip Android/CyanogenMod 6 and jump from Android/CM 5 to Android/CM 7. The Ubuntu Touch stack doesn't need any of Android 6.0 features but they are excited about Android 7 over the potential of a much newer Linux kernel (v4.4).
- uNav as the navigation planning / mapping app of Ubuntu is working towards supporting new features.
- Organizing Band Aids for Ubuntu Touch Devices. This effort would be similar to the old 100 paperclips project for Ubuntu that focused on fixing a lot of tiny bugs/issues with the Linux desktop, but instead this effort would be about fixing lots of the minor shortcomings of Ubuntu Touch.
