Earlier this week Intel pushed their BPTC texture compression support into mainline Mesa and now following in those foot steps are the R600g and RadeonSI driver enablement.

Patches have been outstanding on the mailing list for a while but as of Thursday the support landed for these two modern Radeon Gallium3D drivers to take advantage of BPTC texture compression. The GL_ARB_texture_compress_bptc extension is required by the OpenGL 4.2 specification. This support for the open-source Linux drivers will be part of the upcoming Mesa 10.3 release.

For the R600g driver a Evergreen/Cayman (Radeon HD 5000 series and newer) is required for this GL 4.2 extension per this commit while obviously all current GCN GPUs supported by RadeonSI are supported for this texture compression method.
