Junio Hamano has made for an exciting weekend with the announcement of Git 2.0.0-rc0, the first test release of the upcoming Git 2.0 release that will have features breaking backward compatibility with Git 1.x.

The Git 2.0 release will yield backward-incompatible UI improvements and other changes, but for most users it should be relatively smooth sailing. Besides introducing some changes that break backward incompatibility, there's updates to many git sub-commands, various commit improvements, updates for the port to AIX and to Microsoft MSVC, performance improvements for various Git tasks, and many bug-fixes.

Many more details on Git 2.0.0-rc0 can be found via the mailing list release announcement. Git 2.0 will likely be made official in a few weeks time.
