The Fedora Engineering and Steering Committee (FESCo) has approved plans for "Fedora Kinoite" as the newest spin to debut this autumn alongside Fedora 35.

Fedora Kinoite is basically an immutable desktop spin that is akin to Fedora Silverblue but making use of the KDE Plasma desktop rather than the GNOME Shell. Fedora Kinoite will make use of RPM-OSTree, Flatpaks, Podman, and other technologies employed by Fedora Silverblue, but it will be using the KDE desktop.

So what is "Kinoite" in the equation? Well, it's named because of KDE projects often beginning with "K", Kinoite itself being a blue mineral (thus a play on Fedora Silverblue), and in Japanese it means "There is a tree" as a play on OSTree.

FESCo approved the Kinoite plans for Fedora 35, which is coming out this autumn, and not the Fedora 34 cycle that is culminating already in April.
