This compression support for multi-sample anti-aliasing (MSAA) is a big performance win, as covered a few days ago. Of course, you need to be making use of MSAA anti-aliasing to expect any change in performance and still to be written is MSAA fast clears support.
From Intel's Jason Ekstrand with the commit, "this improves the framerate of the Sascha 'multisampling' demo by 76% on my Sky Lake laptop. Running Talos on medium settings with 8x MSAA, this improves the framerate in the benchmark by 80%."
Just another reason Mesa 17.1 is already looking great.
