Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 "Ice Lake" Linux Performance One Year After Launch

In some cases particularly around the HPC benchmarks like Rodinia, Intel's Clear Linux lead expanded over the past year... It tended to be the fastest Linux distribution at launch last year to little surprise and since then its lead has only expanded in cases like Rodinia. CentOS Stream 9 did see some healthy gains in Rodinia too while Ubuntu 22.04 daily was performing around the same against prior Ubuntu releases. Ubuntu out-of-the-box performed notably slower than CentOS Stream and Clear Linux as among other changes Ubuntu defaults to Intel P-State powersave while the other enterprise Linux distributions were using P-State performance by default.

Clear Linux was squeezing a bit more out of the Xeon Platinum 8380s with the newer compiler, kernel, and other toolchain updates over the past year.

In the case of the MrBayes benchmark the results were largely flat but the main takeaway there was CentOS Stream going from a distant last place finish last year to now with CentOS Stream 9 being on-par with the other modern Linux distributions and actually a slight first place finish.

CentOS Stream 9 and Clear Linux were showing off some nice improvements in OpenJDK Java benchmarks.
