Windows 10 May 2020 vs. Linux Performance On AMD Ryzen Threadripper

For storage the Linux systems with EXT4 were much faster still than Windows 10 with the long-standing NTFS file-system. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with its XFS+Btrfs configuration came in between the EXT4 and Windows results for this very common embedded database library.

When it came to the ParaView workstation visualization performance on Threadripper, the Windows results tended to be quite similar to the Linux performance and for most configurations actually ahead of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS but trailing Manjaro, Clear Linux, Fedora, and openSUSE.

For Leela Chess Zero as the neural network based chess engine, Linux was offering better performance than the Windows builds.

In other multi-threadesd chess benchmarks, Windows 10 tended to deliver around the same level of performance as openSUSE.

With BLAKE2 crypto workloads, Windows 10 came in line with the slower set of Linux distributions tested: Ubuntu 20.04 and openSUSE Tumbleweed.
