Before getting to the exciting AAA Windows vs. Linux gaming tests, first up are some of the cross-platform native Linux gaming tests to show the potential of both driver stacks. These are the tests that are also automated on both platforms via the Phoronix Test Suite.

The simplest gaming test in this article... The classic OpenArena game powered by the open-source ioquake3 game engine. This GL2 era game test shows that the open-source Radeon Linux graphics driver stack does have the potential of being faster than the Radeon Software Crimson ReLive driver on Windows 10 Creators Update.

The demanding Unigine Heaven tech demo meanwhile shows that the OpenGL Windows vs. Linux performance can be very close.

It wasn't that long ago that the open-source Radeon Linux graphics driver was far behind the performance levels of Catalyst / Radeon Software on Windows.
