Starting with the compilation tests, using the newer GCC 4.4 compiler found in Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1 led to a shorter compilation time by approximately 6% when building MySQL 5.1.30.

When building ImageMagick under GCC 4.4 with Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1 it took 41 seconds compared to 45 seconds using the official Ubuntu 9.04 release with GCC 4.3. This is a difference of approximately 9%.

We had run the other tests within the compilation suite found in the Phoronix Test Suite too, and in every case Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1 / GCC 4.4 were faster. With that said, we next moved onto looking at a compression speed test. 7-Zip compression was 4% faster with the Karmic Koala packages compared to the Jaunty Jackalope.
