With the demanding Unigine Heaven benchmark, the deprecated fglrx driver was substantially faster than the current open-source driver performance on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

The open-source driver stack on Ubuntu 16.04 did slightly better relative to the fglrx driver with the newer Unigine Valley test, but still, this now-deprecated binary blob was delivering the best frame-rates.

With high image quality settings, Xonotic on the R9 Fury was quite close between the current open-source driver stack and the older Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS fglrx driver. However, for the older AMD graphics cards, fglrx remained significantly faster.
