Radeon RX Vega OpenGL Linux Performance For September 2017

It's been a couple weeks since running any Mesa Git benchmarks to show the latest state of the open-source Radeon Linux graphics stack, so here are some fresh numbers with the RX Vega 56 and RX Vega 64 along with other Radeon GPUs compared to the NVIDIA Linux performance.

This article provides a fresh look at the open-source AMD Linux graphics performance relative to the NVIDIA proprietary driver. Only OpenGL benchmarks were done for this article as while the RADV Vulkan driver has re-enabled GFX9 support, this latest Mesa Git code or a combination of the AMD staging kernel used has yielded many hangs when trying to run the Vulkan tests. Due to these stability issues, just OpenGL tests were done for today's comparison while hopefully RADV will be in a state for RX Vega testing in the days ahead.

The kernel used for testing was the latest from AMD's staging 4.12 branch with the -next staging branch with DC patches has proven to be very unstable with getting many hangs both for OpenGL and Vulkan. With this 4.12 staging kernel, the AMDGPU DC support was enabled for allowing the Radeon RX Vega support and is why a mainline 4.13/4.14 kernel couldn't be used.

The Radeon hardware tested for these fresh Linux GPU benchmarks were the Radeon RX 580, R9 Fury, RX Vega 56, and RX Vega 64.

On the NVIDIA side was the GeForce GTX 1060, GTX 1070, GTX 1080, and GTX 1080 Ti with the NVIDIA 384.69 driver.
