For a straightforward, cross-platform disk benchmark, PostMark was called into action via the Phoronix Test Suite. Ubuntu 14.10 with its default EXT4 file-system was running about three times faster than the Journaled HFS+ file-system used by OS X.

Of interest to most Phoronix readers will be the graphics tests. Ubuntu 14.10 with its default stack (Mesa 10.3 + Linux 3.16) ended up being faster then Mac OS X with the Haswell-ULT HD Graphics 5000! There was a noticeable lead in Nexuiz on this Apple MacBook Air.

With Urban Terror the results were closer between the competing operating systems, but the results still favored Ubuntu 14.10 when using Intel Haswell graphics.

The frame latency was also much better with Ubuntu Linux.
