With some basic, cross-platform disk benchmarks, Ubuntu and Fedora with the default EXT4 file-system were much faster on the 1TB hard drive than OS X 10.10.2 with the Journaled HFS+ file-system. Ubuntu 15.04 seemed to have a slight lead over Fedora 21, perhaps due to Fedora using LVM by default, etc.
