When running Nexuiz, the DarkPlaces-powered game that is native to all major operating systems, the Ubuntu Linux graphics performance was sharply better than with Mac OS X 10.7.4. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS delivered a noticeable performance benefit over Apple's operating system while with Ubuntu 12.10 -- thanks to Intel DRM driver improvements and Unity desktop fixes -- the performance is getting even better for the Intel Sandy Bridge graphics. It will be interesting to see how OS X 10.8 changes the Intel graphics game.

Mac OS X 10.7.4 was faster with its OpenGL driver on the Intel HD 3000 graphics when running the basic OpenArena game. With Ubuntu 12.10, however, the gap at least narrows between Linux and Mac OS X for the game that is not very demanding by today's standards.

While OpenArena is one of the most popular ioquake3-based games, for Urban Terror, another ioquake3 game, Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 ran noticeably faster than the latest stable release of Apple's desktop/laptop software platform.
